International Partnerships

Immunization information systems (IIS) are used in many countries around the world, and many more locales are considering the development of an IIS for use in their country. These systems may exist under different names (for example, electronic immunization registries [EIR]), but many of our goals and challenges are the same.

AIRA serves its members and the broader IIS and health IT communities by promoting and supporting the use of immunization information to ensure healthy communities. In this capacity, AIRA has partnered with international organizations to support IIS around the world. Over the past decade, AIRA has worked with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on several projects.

Key highlights include:

  • Serving as a member of the External Advisory Board for the EUVABECO project (European Vaccinations Beyond Covid) through which five initiatives are being launched to enhance vaccination efforts, including a digital cross-border vaccine card.
  • In partnership with SYADEM (Système d’Aide à la Decision Médicale), leading efforts to launch the International Vaccine Codes Initiative, a centralized, international effort to form a network of vaccine code custodians and experts through which vaccine coding information is shared and cross-walked to improve interoperability.
  • Participating in and contributing subject matter expertise to several HL7 International workgroups, including co-chair representation on the Conformance Work Group and the Public Health Work Group.
